Retail Forward's ShopperScape™

What is it?

Shifts in consumer shopping behavior are driving radical changes across the retail landscape. Consumers are becoming increasingly difficult to understand and challenging to predict. Buying behavior is more complex. Consumer insight has become a critical competitive asset in an industry marked by market saturation, consolidation, intense competition, and a rapid pace of innovation. Where do you turn for the consumer insight you need to make informed, fact-based business decisions?

ShopperScape™, Retail Forward's monthly online survey of over 4,000 primary shoppers in households, tracks:

  • Who shops which retailers regularly and recently?
  • Which venues—stores, Web sites or catalogs—are shopped?
  • What do shoppers buy and where are they spending the most money on categories?
  • What do shoppers spend on broad merchandise groups, where do they spend the most money and why?

ShopperScape™ also serves the Retail Forward Intelligence System™ with an exclusive group of timely questions, written by retail experts, which change monthly.

What does it do?

ShopperScape™ answers retailers' questions such as:

  • Where else are my customers shopping?
  • What are my customers’ online and catalog shopping habits?
  • How stable is my customer base?
  • What are my customers buying from my competition and why?
  • How loyal are my customers compared to competition?
  • What do my customers spend on broad merchandise groups, where do they spend and why?
  • By merchandise group, how do I fare against competition?
  • What changes in my customer base are occurring over time?

ShopperScape™ answers manufacturer/wholesalers' questions such as:

  • Where are shoppers buying the categories I sell?
  • Who buys my categories and is that changing?
  • Why are shoppers buying certain types of merchandise where they buy?
  • How are my retail customers doing in attracting shoppers and retailing their loyalty?
  • How do my retail customers’ shoppers compare demographically?

How is it delivered?

ShopperScape™ is delivered through:

  1. An online database powered by Pulsar Web, an easy-to-use interactive tool for our clients who want to do their own analyses.  Retail Forward provides training and support for users who want to filter data in various ways to examine certain population segments and/or run crosstab tables to make comparisons among various population segments.  The software allows users to make tables for exporting into Excel files for additional analysis or use in reports.  It also provides a suite of different types of charts, which can be exported and used in reports.  Electronic banner books are available in E-Tabs reader format.
  2. Online access to standard reports on channels and categories for our clients who want access to a wealth of information without having to conduct their own analyses.  Standard reports are available for 15 channels, which are updated monthly, and 70+ categories, which are updated quarterly.
  3. For clients who need to analyze the information in a way that requires building new variables and clients who don't have in-house resources available for analysis, Retail Forward offers consultants who will "do-it-for-you" on an hourly fee basis.  In fact we can set up a set of custom reports for clients, which will automatically update monthly through the online database and then can be exported easily into Excel files.
